AFL ‘unicorn’ Luke Jackson puts on a show as Freo make it six straight with victory over Carlton

Fremantle “unicorn” Luke Jackson showed off his freakish talents with two stunning goals in the Dockers’ hard-fought 14-point win over Carlton on Saturday night.

Jackson produced two near identical goals from the centre square to have the Optus Stadium crowd rocking.

The first happened in from the opening ball-up to start the second quarter. Jackson won the hitout, got on the end of a handball and then did a one-two to get the ball back before launching a long bomb from outside 50.

It was a similar situation in the fourth quarter when he again one the hitout and pushed forward. But this time he got the ball back inside 50 and showed his talents by finishing with a brilliant left-foot snap.

“A unicorn, just doing unicorn things,” Adam Papalia said in commentary.

Jackson finished the game with 31 hitouts, 21 possessions and two goals in a brilliant display, but he was trumped for best afield by Shai Bolton.

Bolton also kicked two goals, to go with his 33 touches and eight tackles.

Carlton were far from disgraced, but were undone by a devastating 10-minute spell to open the fourth quarter when the Dockers piled on four quick goals.

To the Blues’ credit, they fought out the game and ended up winning the final quarter with five goals.

Captain Patrick Cripps (31 disposals, 11 clearances) and Sam Walsh (32 disposals) led the way, while Brodie Kemp kicked four goals and Mitch McGovern chipped in with three.

Fremantle’s sixth win on the trot improved their season record to 6-1, while Carlton’s finals hopes appear shot after moving to 1-6.

Carlton had been in the headlines all week following Elijah Hollands’ high-profile mental-health episode against Collingwood, with the 24-year-old admitted to hospital on Monday.

His younger brother Ollie Hollands was initially named to play Fremantle and flew with the squad to Perth on Friday, but the Blues decided it was in his best interests not to play.

Fremantle were left with a few early worries to some of their key talls.

Spearhead Pat Voss was withdrawn just before the bounce because of illness, and Josh Treacy was left writhing in pain midway through the first term after injuring his outstretched right elbow in a big collision.

A short time later, defender Brennan Cox was limping after hurting his right knee while being tackled.

Both Treacy and Cox were able to shake off those niggles to play out the term, and things looked bleak for Carlton as Fremantle won the first 11 clearances of the match.

Treacy kicked two goals for the term, but Carlton made the most of their chances to be down by just eight points at quarter-time.

Fremantle looked set for a healthy half-time lead until soft free kicks to Kemp and McGovern helped Carlton stay within 11 points.

The most bizarre moment of the second quarter came when a snaking snap from Jye Amiss was awarded a goal, despite the ball appearing to have not made it past the goal line before zagging away.

Cooper Lord had the chance to put Carlton in front midway through the third quarter, but his bouncing snap went just the other side of the post.

Fremantle settled from that point, with two quick goals from late inclusion Jeremy Sharp and then two majors from Bolton early in the final quarter sealing the win as the lead ballooned out to 41 points.

Carlton’s Lachie Cowan will be sweating to see if his off-the-ball hit to Murphy Reid’s mid-riff in the third quarter earns him a suspension.
