A little over a decade ago, I studied abroad in Rome. Everything from the food to the architecture caught my eye, but the fashion really had me in a chokehold. I had to buy another suitcase just to bring back all of my finds! So recently, when I went back to The Eternal City, I kept an eye on what the locals were wearing, and one thing that really stood out was how Italian women were wearing silk scarves around their waists. They folded them into a triangle and tied them around their torsos over linen pants, jeans, skirts and more.
I’ve seen a couple of Americans wear the trend in New York City, but in Rome, the look was everywhere. It’s unexpected and effortlessly cool, but it’s also practical. A scarf can jazz up a simple T-shirt and jeans, cover up an elastic or drawstring waistband, hide a pants button that won’t quite shut or even disguise a full belly after a long meal (hey, we’ve all been there). And when you don’t want to wear it as a belt, you can tie your scarf around your neck, wear it as a headband or use it to accessorize your handbag.
After coming back to the States, I started searching for one (or a few) scarves to add to my wardrobe. Want to try the trend? Take a look at some of my favorite finds, starting at just $7.
